SALLERI, SOLUKHUMBU — An orientation campaign has been launched across Solukhumbu to equip school students with hands-on knowledge of environmental conservation and responsible waste management from an early age.
Targeting 14 schools across Solududhkunda Municipality, the ongoing drive held an interactive session on Wednesday for students of Dorpu Basic School at Chhulyamu in Ward No. 6. The initiative seeks to educate children on proper household and school waste disposal, environmental stewardship, and the localized impacts of climate change.
The campaign is spearheaded by the Sherpa Children Aid Association, with financial backing from Solududhkunda Municipality and Solu Chyam, France. During the session, students learned practical approaches to mitigating climate impacts, sorting biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, refraining from haphazard littering, and adopting safe disposal methods. Instructors also encouraged students to participate in local tree-plantation drives and routine sanitation campaigns to keep their surroundings clean.
Working toward the broader goal of building a “Clean City,” the project has been actively driving environmental and sanitation initiatives across the municipality for the past three years. According to organizers, this phase of the campaign, which began on Kartik 10, will conclude on Friday after covering all 14 designated schools.
Speaking at the event, Barty, a member of Solu Chyam France, and Santa Bahadur Magar (“Rabbit”), Program Coordinator at the Sherpa Children Aid Association, highlighted that the orientation encourages students to embrace eco-friendly habits in their daily routines and take personal responsibility for hygiene and sanitation. Local teachers and parents commended the partner organizations for fostering civic responsibility and positive behavioral change among the children.
Organizers emphasized that instilling eco-conscious habits in students from a young age carries sustainable practices directly into households and surrounding communities. They noted that transforming environmental conservation from a sporadic campaign into an everyday habit remains vital to realizing a cleaner, greener municipality.
